In Lost Planet 3 you go back to the roots of the series, to learn about the origins of the human colony on E.D.N. This time you take on a role not of a soldier or a warrior, but an ordinary mining mech operator - Jim, who arrives to this world in pursuit of money. The local colonization base, Coronis, is in urgent need of thermal energy for the Earth that is running out of its own supplies, so Jim and other mercenaries must head on to explore dangerous areas. Most of these are inhabited by akrids – the local species, in whose veins thermal energy flows.

So the game’s pinnacle is the story campaign, which takes place in icy environment only (in the previous installment you could also visit jungle and desert areas). Jim, besides walking, also moves around on board of a mining mech with mechanical arms. One of these serves as a gripper, while the second is a drill. Interestingly, while controlling the vehicle you observe the world from first-person perspective, whereas when fighting on foot – in third-person.
