The story in Kona begins in the October of 1970. It is the northern part of the Québec province, where first signs of winter are discernible. The story focuses on a conflict between the native local community of people known as Cree, and W. Hamilton, a rich man and the owner of the most profitable copper mines in the region. The man is being accused of destroying sacred places for his own profit. Thus nobody seem to be surprised when his holiday chalet in the mountains gets devastated. Hamilton realizes it is high time he took the initiative and hires a war veteran and private detective called Carl Faubert (the protagonist). However, when the detective arrives to meet Hamilton, he discovers that not only did the employer disappear, but so happened to the entire local community. From now on, his task is to get to the bottom of this case.
Kona is a first person perspective game. It mingles survival with adventure elements. Thus the gameplay consists of exploration, puzzle solving and searching for interesting items and clues. The protagonist is equipped with a camera and a notebook. Having gathered sufficient amount of evidence, the player can recreate past events in order to see what had happened.
Apart from carrying out an investigation, it is necessary to ensure survival of the protagonist. The virtual environment is filled with different threats, such as low temperatures, blizzards or hungry predators. However, flora and fauna are not the only sources of dangers - different creatures from legends will try to kill the protagonist, such as Wendigo. Weapons are hardly accessible, for the most part the player has to use their wits.
