In Open Country player takes on the role of an employee of a big company, who is fed up with functioning in the corporate world. Protagonist decides to move out of the city and taste the hardships of life in the American wilderness. On the spot, the protagonist quickly makes friends with employees of the local national park, which can only benefit everyone.

In Open Country the action is shown from the third person perspective (TPP). We have a vast area at our disposal, including both the wilderness itself and the town, where we can go when necessary (for example to replenish supplies). Wandering (on foot) through the land, we complete a variety of tasks (more than thirty) given by the natives.

We also hunt with a wide range of firearms, bows and cold weapons, such as spears and knives. Even with the best equipment in our backpacks, we have to be constantly on our guard. While deer, for example, do not pose much of a threat to us, wolves or bears are a real danger, and one accurate shot is often not enough to kill them.

In addition, during the game we acquire valuable resources. For example, wood is useful both for producing useful items and ammunition (such as arrows), and to build temporary structures (including huts, in which we can hide after dark) or to light a fire to deter aggressive game.
